What am I supposed to do? My boyfriend gets on facebook but doesnt say anything to me until a long time?

We facebook or instant message each other a lot since he lives far away and when I see that he is logged on he doesnt talk to me until like ten or twenty minutes later. Should I always just initate it or does that seem like I am a girlfriend who smothers him?
