How come when you call your boyfriend alot he feels like your smothering him?

my boyfriend was so nice to me when we first got together and i didnt put too much work into the relationship,i didnt really care that much.now that i care he doesnt call me anymore,text me anymore,and he goes out with his friends but when i go out with my friends he gets mad.Hes says that i am smothering him but really all i thought i was doing was caring.should i move on or should i not worry about something small like this and stop bugging him about it?
