Shortcut links broken?

For the second time in about three weeks, my primary search engine, YAHOO, and yahoo messanger seem to just stop working for a period of time. This does not affect my internet connection. I have done scans which say my links are broken to shortcuts. What does this mean and how can I fix them so that this does not happen?
