Confused about my controlling boyfriend..need help!!!!!!!!!?

my boyfriend and i have been dating for a year and a half. In the initial stages everything was going fine but then he used to have bouts of rage when he knew about my exes(actually he knew about them before we officially started dating and yet he used to be angry). during that time i felt i did something wrong that made him angry and therefore i always apologized.slowly his behavior worsened. he didnt want me cut my hair,or get a tatoo. he would ask details of my day before sleep and details of any guy i added on social networking sites.he wouldnt want to let me go anywhere without him.i started feeling smothered and stopped catering to his needs.we started having frequent fights.one day we had a huge discussion and i went out of touch. he called me and now he has curbed his possessive behavior which is very apparent.he has never been physically or verbally abusive. now he is proposing to me to get married. i am really confused..please help me.
